Chief Red Cloud (Lakota Sioux)Wyoming- Montana Territory 1868via paintings.ilove via emol.org/natamHanson defends outsourcing manu/serv jobs9.29.10. By Election Day, outsourcing will be portrayed as equivalent to child-molesting in its depravity. But the charge of greed and lack of economic patriotism is disingenuous… Take the most liberal icons of the business world- from Bill Gates to George Soros- and you will find ownerships of, or investments in, American companies that outsource production overseas.…Second, is there something called “insourcing” to explain why a Toyota or a Honda relocates plants to the United States, depriving Japanese workers of high-paying jobs in order to maximize profits for its corporate hierarchy? When Mercedes opens an American car-making plant, are we supposed to applaud a foreign company’s hiring our workers and attempting to share some of its success with the homeland of its customers or lament the loss of German jobs? Mercedes is a hero to us but a traitor to Germany?
Democrats privately know that free trade and cheap manufacturing abroad result in cheap consumer goods at places like Walmart and Home Depot, which expands the purchasing power of the strapped American consumer. Republicans stress that in the open arena of trade, the more competition, the more pressure on American firms to stay lean and turn out better products at lower costs.

Ending Deferral of Foreign Income by WSJ
9.28.10. The U.S. already has one of the most punitive corporate tax regimes in the world and this tax increase would make that competitive disadvantage much worse, accelerating the very outsourcing of jobs that Mr. Obama says he wants to reverse. Under current tax law, American companies pay the corporate tax rate in the host country where the subsidiary is located. US companies pay the difference between the U.S. rate (35%) and the foreign rate when they bring profits back to the U.S. This is called deferral- i.e, the U.S. tax is deferred until the money comes back to these shores. Mr. Obama’s plan would apply the U.S. corporate tax on overseas profits as soon as they are earned. This is intended to discourage firms from moving operations out of the U.S.

The result: U.S. companies will lose business to foreign rivals. U.S. firms will be bought by tax-advantaged foreign companies. U.S. multinational firms will move their headquarters overseas. They can move to Ireland (where the corporate tax rate is 12.5%) or Germany or Taiwan, or dozens of countries with less hostile tax climates… Two industries that would be most harmed would be financial services and technology, and their emphasis on human capital makes them especially able to pack up and move their operations abroad. CEO Steve Ballmer has warned that if the President’s plan is enacted, Microsoft would move facilities and jobs out of the U.S.

Lonesome Charlie at Little Bighorn(by Mike Schreck) via american.gal via davycrock.almanThe Foundry rejects Judge Walker8.04.10: Today’s decision by a federal district judge in San Francisco striking down state constitutional protections for marriage and inventing a spurious federal constitutional right to same-sex marriage is an example of extreme judicial activism.  Moreover, it is an affront to the millions of California voters who approved Proposition 8 in 2008 after months of vigorous public debate. The people of California, and the US, have made clear that they have not consented to the redefinition of marriage.  In state after state- 45 in all- they have chosen to reaffirm the meaning of marriage as the union of one man and one woman. Marriage has enjoyed unique status because unions of husband and wife are, in fact, unique. They uniquely serve the common good in ways that same-sex combinations simply cannot.
We are confident the Supreme Court will reject Judge Walker’s view that the people of California cannot protect the meaning of marriage in their state constitution. We join our voices with the clear decisions rendered by large margins in the vast majority of the states. It is time for the American people to stand up in support of their right to protect marriage.

L’Amour ages with grace1987: Still ruggedly handsome in his late 70s, L’Amour is tall and broad-shouldered with eyebrows that peak in gray-brown arrowheads. He wears Western shirts and string ties and cowboy boots, and speaks in a measured, confident baritone. His manner is sober, self-contained and unaffectedly modest. L’Amour looks like he might once have been a tough hombre- he was a prizefighter and a seaman as a young man. Though he lives among the Hollywood glitterati, there is nothing Hollywood about him. He takes more pride in his family and his 10,000 volume library than in any of his million-sellers. L’Amour waited until he was well into his 40s to marry…”Nature has no place for non-producers”; to stop producing is to die. His books are for the “people who struggle to make ends meet.” Books surge and spill and twine through almost every room of his house. (via Don Jackson)

R.Kessler describes Air Force One & Cheney
Beginning with Eisenhower, presidents used Boeing 707s, which carried just fifty passengers. After George HW Bush became president, the present 231 ft long Boeing 747- 200B bubble top jumbo jet was used. The current Air Force One has a range of 9,600 miles and a max cruising altitude of 45k ft. It cruises at 600 mph but can achieve speeds of 700 mph. AFO carries 80 passengers with 87 telephones, 1.2 mil ft of electrical wire, all shielded from electromagnetic pulses emitted during a nuclear blast. Based at Andrews Air Force Base east of Washington, AFO costs $34k per hour of flight time for fuel/supplies alone. George W. Bush remembered the names of every member of the White House residence staff and crew of AFO. He would play baseball with Secret Service agents. Bush had the simplest tastes- preferring peanut butter/jelly sandwiches and Fritos.

[On September 11, Bush visited Booker Elementary in Sarasota, FL with Andy Card, Rod Paige, and Karl Rove- 9:02 AM] A few minutes after reading to the children, Card whispered: “America is under attack.” Bush to Cheney: “We’re going to find out who did this, and we’re going to kick their ass.” Like Bush, Cheney felt no affinity for the academic world. Cheney grew up in Casper, Wyoming. He attened Yale for 2 years but had to drop out because his grades were poor. He got a union job laying power lines in Rock Springs, WY. Later he earned a BA from UofWy Laramie and was hired by Don Rumsfeld (1968) as a White House aide under Nixon. 1978- elected to House of Rep, 89- HW Bush’s Sec of Defense and directed ‘91 invasion of Iraq. ‘95- became chairman and CEO of Haliburton, an energy equip/construction firm based in Dallas, where he earned $2mil a year. Colt Lightning .38 (1877)During a card game in a smoky saloon, Confederate Davis Tutt snatched Jim “Wild Bill” Hickok’s- Waltham gold pocketwatch and dangled it around like a peacock. Big mistake. 75 yards apart both men reached for their pistols. Smoke rises from Wild Bill’s colt navy .36; Tutt sleeps with the fishes.
