David Roberts: I went to Vietnam as an 18 year old Corporal Squad Leader. My nickname as I came into the Corps was Red Dog. My call sign always in Vietnam was Red Dog. Every time one of my civilian friends calls me Red Dog I feel warm, cared for, and friendship. At the same time I get the chills, all alone, and feel the emptiness, a hollow deep emptiness… as Red Dog I had real brothers, more real than blood. Yes Doc, I know what war is and what war can do.

All my life I’ve looked for meaning and purpose- answers to life’s core questions. Found a whole load of nonsense in bars and fraternities; movies, music, books, and pleasures of the flesh. Time has lead me to the revelation that I love this country- I’m humbled to be an American, a Californian, a Christian; a servant to my family and to my republic. It’s uplifting to reflect upon the great men who created the land I live in today. This website started out as a scrapbook of the 3 big wars of America- Revo, Civil, Gerpan. But then I wanted to shine a light on California & the West, my home. With each mouse click, other subjects came to fore, including trucks, guns, jobs, race and family. So each time I stray from a pointed life, I consider: the flag, the cross and the kin. Then I’m brought back to why I get out of bed each morning. - Mico C (Orange County, CA 2009)
